Is a young Gold Coast Suns star on his way back to peak form? What can we expect from a Brisbane Lions veteran? Proof that this young star will be a star when the time comes? These are some of the questions that will be answered in the round 4 preview of buy, sell and hold. It’s essential to keep in mind that GameDay Squad is a dynasty fantasy football platform and that will be heavily taken into consideration in this article. Let us know your thoughts on who we have included below on all of our socials - twitter, facebook, instagram, discord.
BUY!
Matt Rowell
Gold Coast Suns - Midfielder (MID)
Sooo... When is it an appropriate time to start talking about Matt Rowell as a player-of-difference option? Rowell has been the Gold Coast Suns best player to this point in the season and looks to have some form of fantasy relevance creeping back in to his game. Through is first three games, Rowell is averaging 113 GDS fantasy points per game which included a big 132 points in round 1 to start the year. He's got all the opportunity in the world at the moment as well, Rowell has totalled the most centre-bounce-attendances of all Suns players to date, and hasn't fallen below 80% CBAs in a single game so far this season. Rowell's stats back up the opportunity Stuart Dew has bestowed upon him averaging 15 kicks, 9 handballs, 2 marks and 6 tackles a game, numbers we haven't seen from Rowell since before his devastating injury in his rookie year. I think Rowell is definitely someone to keep tabs on to see if he can go to another level this year... he's trending that way.
Sam Walsh
Carlton Blues - Midfielder (MID)
It's easy to forget about Sammy Walsh but now might be the best time to go out and secure a Walsh card! There is still no official timeline or date on his return from back surgery over the off-season but from what we have seen from Carlton and their midfield rotations, it's very easy to see where Walsh will fit in. The highest averaging CBA attendee for the Blues so far this season is George Hewett, who was tipped to return to a defender role this year. Beside Hewett, the likes of Matt Kennedy, Ed Curnow and Adam Cerra have all had their fair share of midfield time, player you would expect Walsh to rocket ahead of on the depth chart. Walsh is a star and with his value likely at an all time low, snap him up while you can.
SELL
Tanner Bruhn
Geelong Cats - Forward (FWD)
Tanner Bruhn was a popular choice across all Aussie Rules fantasy platforms coming into the season. Many thought Bruhn was a lock for a solid midfield role, which obviously creates a level of hype when a young player of Bruhn's talent is expected that role and unfortunately, Bruhn is yet to see over 45% CBAs in a single game so far this year. Couple his limited opportunity with the fact that veteran Mitch Duncan is due back any week now and it might be time to let go of some of your Bruhn cards. He still have potential long term, but for this season, it might be chalked.
Dayne Zorko
Brisbane Lions - Forward (FWD)
Dayne Zorko's first game of the season = 137 GDS fantasy points Dayne Zorko's second game of the season = 74 GDS fantasy points
Unfortunately, that will be the tale for all Zorko owners in 2023, and likely beyond. The former Brisbane captain and star Dayne Zorko who is now 34 years old, may not have the same level of scoring consistency that we have seen in the past. Zorko has shifted from a bulk midfield role to a hybrid outside/forward role that will inevitably be near impossible to string a handfull of good games from. With his age and boom-or-bust nature, Zorko won't be finding his way into my team any time soon...
HOLD...
Bailey Smith
Western Bulldogs - Midfielder (MID)
Bailey Smith has been the latest victim of a Bevo'ing. Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beverage, who famously despises fantasy football has kept fantasy coach's on their toes once again, this time awarding budding superstar Bailey Smith with just 5% CBAs in their round 3 matchup last week. It's getting harder and harder to trust any Western Bulldogs midfielder as their roles are so volatile right now. The one fact that rings true is that Bailey Smith is a fantasy gem, he will be a fantasy stud for an extremely long time, it's just that Bevo needs to hold his magnets in one place for a few weeks. Smith is a must-hold, do not sell Bailey Smith.
Luke Jackson
Fremantle Dockers - Forward (FWD)
Through all the doom and gloom surrounding Luke Jackson's fantasy prospects, he goes ahead and puts his first 100+ GDS fantasy score of 2023, just to remind everyone that he has a bit of fantasy value in him still. While he isn't out of the woods completely it does go to show that when he does get that sole ruckman role, he will be a valuable fantasy asset for anyone who held on to hi through these Sean Darcy and Max Gawn years!
