Can Shaun Johnson keep up this tear? Which winger/fullbacks should I choose? Is Payne Haas the best middle-forward in GameDay Squad Rugby League? These are some of the questions that will be answered in the round 5 preview of buy, sell and hold. It’s essential to keep in mind that GameDay Squad is a dynasty fantasy football platform and that will be heavily taken into consideration in this article. Shaun Johnson
New Zealand Warriors - Half (HLF)
This season Shaun Johnson has led the Warriors to four wins from five games. After a tough 2022 SJ has really stood up when it mattered and is scoring GameDay Squad Rugby League points at will. Not only is he gaining plenty of attacking stats but his base stats are incredible and his tackle efficiency is through the roof! If you have one of Hynes or Cleary, SJ is the next option as your second half. He will be a very handy option throughout origin.
Payne Haas
Brisbane Broncos - Middle-Forward (MID)
Haas is a seasoned veteran and someone you must have in your middles! It is highly likely he will be the highest scoring middle in GDS this year so if you don’t have him, get him! His minutes are consistently 60+ and his points per minute (ppm) are in and around one ppm! A safe 65+ every week for your GDS team. A solid dynasty card to own as he is still very young and has a huge career ahead. At such a young age Haas has already achieved a huge amount!
SELL
James Fisher-Harris
Penrith Panthers - Middle-Forward (MID)
Unfortunately for the big kiwi enforcer he suffered what appeared to be an MCL sprain and looks likely for a stint on the sideline (approximately 4 weeks). He has been a solid MID to start 2023 wracking up scores of 43, 51, 65 before being injured in R5. Move him back to your emergencies until he returns from injury. He will be someone you’ll want around origin as he generally plays big mins in the lock position with Isaah Yeo playing for the blues.
Kotoni Staggs
Brisbane Broncos - Centre (CTR)
If you are an owner of Kotoni Staggs I would be looking to move him into your emergencies. With the way the Broncos are dominating Staggs has been well below his best and very sporadic in his scoring. Scoring 2 meat pies in R5 he still only managed a 25pt effort. Missed Tackles (MT) and Errors (E) are what is killing Staggs currently, but on another note his attacking upside is very good!
HOLD...
Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow
Dolphins - Winger/Fullback (WFB)
The Hammer started the 2023 season in blistering form recording scores of 58, 59, 43 & 52 before recording his most disappointing score of the season in round 5. With the Dolphins seemingly starting to fade after their huge start it is evident that Hamiso is the main victim of this. His stats were way down in R5 only running for 99metres (MG), recording 2 missed tackles (MT), 2 errors (E) and even scoring a try. I feel there are better options around in the WFB department with the likes of Latrell Mitchell, Dylan Edwards and Reece Walsh. Keep an eye on Hammer though, because when the Phins are up Hammer is in the thick of it. A very solid dynasty card to own if you have him.
James Tedesco
Sydney Roosters - Winger/Fullback (WFB)
If you are an owner of Tedesco it is bad news. With his category one head knock in round 5, Teddy will miss the round six clash with the Melbourne Storm based on the 11 day stand down policy. Teddy was looking very dangerous early on in their clash with the Eels until he was hit high, ruling him out of the remainder of the game. Move him to your emergencies for this week and keep an eye on Joey Manu returning in the No 1 jersey.
