GameDay Squad Women's Fantasy Footy - 2023 Team Reviews Pt.3

Geelong Cats

Overview:

Geelong have managed to build one of the strongest midfield units in the competition, but unfortunately they haven’t seen the finals success they would have hoped for. With continuing development, I’d expect to see Geelong push a bit further this year.

Player Scouting:

Name: Georgie Prespakis

Position: Midfield

Season 7 average: 110.63

Review: The younger of the Prespakis sisters is easily one of the best dynasty prospects in GameDay Squad. In only her second season, she was the 5th highest average in the competition and will look to push even higher again.

Name: Amy McDonald

Position: Midfield

Season 7 average: 105.90

Review: McDonald brings a bit more experience to the Geelong midfield but still managed to produce her career high average last season. She was also clear ahead of the rest of the competition with average contested possessions, so you know she’ll always be around the ball.

Name: Chantel Emonson

Position: Defender

Season 7 average: 63.20

Review: Maybe not your first-choice fantasy defender but she does have a relatively decent ceiling. Maybe look at playing her in some favourable matchups this year.

Points conceded:

With such a talented midfield pack, it’s notoriously difficult for opponents to score in that area. They also conceded the 3rd least points to forwards last season. For defenders and rucks they sit in the middle, so don’t overthink it.

Gold Coast Suns

Overview:

After finishing just outside the 8 last season, Gold Coast have had a massive shake up, turning over nearly 1/3 of their squad. They lost some key players in the trade period so I predict season 8 will be a challenge for the suns.

Player Scouting:

Name: Charlie Rowbottom

Position: Midfield

Season 7 average: 104.6

Review: Rowbottom is another player who racked up the contested possessions last season. She’s a former number 1 draft pick and still young. Look to see her take the next step this season and push into the elite territory.

Name: Elizabeth Keaney

Position: Defender

Season 7 average: 67.11

Review: Keaney’s average last season looks worse than it should because of one bad game. She could still be a risky pick but there’s not a lot separating the defenders this season. Might be worth a start in the right match up.

Name: Alison Drennan

Position: Midfield

Season 7 average: 97.5

Review: At 32 years of age, Drennan might not be the best legacy option in the league, but her experience definitely makes up for that. Season 7 was her highest scoring fantasy season of her career, and as the squads talent builds around her, she may get even better. I wouldn’t be seeker her out on the transfer market, but she’s a great option if you already have her.

Points conceded:

In all areas other than the ruck, Gold Coast tend to be quite easy to score against. Definitely a good matchup target if you are playing that way.

Greater Western Sydney Giants

Overview:

GWS were one of the founding AFLW clubs and have consistently sat in the middle of the pack. They weren’t very active in the trade period due to a large number of players returning from the inactive list so I can’t see much changing.

Player Scouting:

Name: Georgia Garnett

Position: Forward

Season 7 average: 77

Review: Garnett was the 4th highest averaging GameDay Squad forward for season 7. She has a high time on ground percentage which is important for us and can swing back if needed. She’s more of a mark/kick kind of player than a big goal scorer but points are points so who cares.

Name: Alyce Parker

Position: Midfield

Season 7 average: 109.89

Review: Parker is the winner of the past 4 club best and fairest awards for a reason. She offers strength through the contest and a very well rounded style of play so points will come from everywhere. She’s only 22 and improving ever season so I’d expect her to lift again. Definitely one to watch.

Name: Nicola Barr

Position: Forward

Season 7 average: 63.43

Review: Another potential forward option offered up by GWS is Nicola Barr. She’s been at GWS since season 1 and had her best fantasy year in 2022. She had a very strong end to season 7 where she scored over 90 in 3 of her 4 last games, so we can only hope that form will carry over to season 8.

Point conceded:

GWS conceded the most points in the competition to opposition midfielders last season, so you should definitely be targeting that matchup. They are neither here nor there for the other areas so less important.
